Welcome to the Master of Science program in Biological Oceanography at the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel. This program is designed for those passionate about understanding the complex interactions within marine ecosystems and their impact on the global environment. Here, you will embark on a journey that combines rigorous academic training with hands-on research, preparing you for a successful career in marine science.
Program Structure
The MSc in Biological Oceanography is a comprehensive two-year program divided into four semesters:
1. First Semester: This semester lays the foundation with compulsory modules covering the theoretical and practical fundamentals of marine environment analysis. You will gain essential knowledge in biology, chemistry, geology, physics, and mathematics.
2. Second Semester: Building on the first semester, you will start to specialize by choosing compulsory/elective and elective modules. This semester also introduces you to the theory and practice of conducting research projects.
3. Third Semester: This semester focuses on further specialization and caninclude a nine-day research cruise. You will also begin working with the research group in which you plan to conduct your master’s thesis, getting in touch with cutting-edge research, methods and literature.
4. Fourth Semester: The final semester is dedicated to your master’s thesis. You will apply the knowledge and skills acquired in the previous semesters to a research project, culminating in a written thesis and an oral defence.
